Theories of Asian Architecture
Project 1
This is a visual research observation on a chosen street in Malaysia that portrays an abundance of culture, architecture and heritage. We were required to sketch our observations onto A4 papers and provide context through writing sentences alongside the sketches.
Through this project, I got to learn more about the details that lie around Jalan Sultan that I've never knew they were there. I observed the community and the activities done around the streets, it was a very interesting sight. The heritage architecture was fairly prominent in the area which is something to be preserved even longer.
Infographic Assignment
This assignment required us to choose from a list of vernacular architecture and to explain its architectural characteristics in an infographic form. Hence, I chose the Malaysian Vernacular Architecture; The Kampung House.
I have learnt so much about the kampung house from its climatic features to its construction methods. It is truly the pinnacle of Malaysian house design as it responds to the tropical climate while maintaining comfort in the interior. I personally would wish more modern houses adopted these architectural aspects instead of chasing modern standards.
Project 2
The final project is a continuation to the first project. It is a research poster discussing issues and factors based on a chosen theme of the Malaysian street.
I was able to learn more about adaptive reuse and the current issue of deteriorating heritage architecture in this country especially in Jalan Sultan. I believe that heritage architecture is not limited to colonial buildings, it applies to old shophouses as well. They portray culture and a unique identity to the Chinese community in Malaysia. Losing these identity will only worsen tangible values of the Malaysian culture.
